What are the Moon phases?

The Moon phases are the changing shapes of the Moon as we see it from Earth across its roughly 29.5-day cycle, the synodic month. The Moon makes no light of its own; it reflects the Sun, and as it orbits Earth the angle between the Sun, Earth and Moon shifts, so we see different amounts of its lit surface. That slow rhythm from the dark New Moon to the bright Full Moon and back is one of the oldest timekeepers humanity has, and in astrology each phase carries its own energy and meaning for setting intentions and living in tune with natural cycles.

The 8 Moon phases explained

New Moon — the Moon sits between Earth and Sun and is invisible. This is the cycle's reset: a time for fresh starts, planting seeds and setting clear intentions for the weeks ahead.

Waxing Crescent — a slender sliver of light returns. Energy builds, so it is a time to take the first small steps, gather momentum and nurture new goals.

First Quarter — the Moon is half-lit and rises in the afternoon. This turning point often brings a challenge or decision, calling for action, commitment and pushing through obstacles.

Waxing Gibbous — more than half lit and growing. A phase of refinement, adjustment and persistence as your efforts near completion.

Full Moon — the Moon is fully lit, opposite the Sun. The peak of the cycle brings culmination, heightened emotion, clarity and release; what you began at the New Moon often comes to a head now.

Waning Gibbous — the light begins to fade. Also called the Disseminating Moon, it is a time for gratitude, sharing what you have learned and giving back.

Last Quarter — half-lit again and waning. A phase of release, forgiveness and letting go of what no longer serves you, clearing space for the next cycle.

Waning Crescent — the final sliver before darkness. The Balsamic Moon is a time to rest, reflect, surrender and prepare for the New Moon and a fresh beginning.

How to work with the Moon phases

A simple way to live with the lunar cycle is to set intentions at the New Moon and release at the Full Moon. The waxing half of the cycle (New to Full) favours growth, action and building, while the waning half (Full to New) favours releasing, reflecting and resting. Many people also track which zodiac sign the Moon is in at each phase, shown in the calendar above, since the sign colours the mood: a Full Moon in fiery Aries feels very different from one in dreamy Pisces. Aligning your planning, rituals and self-care with these natural rhythms can bring a welcome sense of flow and timing.

Frequently asked

How long is one full Moon phase cycle?

One complete cycle from New Moon to New Moon, the synodic month, lasts about 29.5 days. The eight phases each last roughly three to four days as the Moon moves through them.

What is the difference between a waxing and waning Moon?

A waxing Moon is growing brighter, from New toward Full, and is associated with building, growth and taking action. A waning Moon is shrinking, from Full back toward New, and is linked to releasing, reflecting and letting go.

What does the Moon phase mean in astrology?

In astrology each phase carries a distinct energy for working with intention: New Moons for beginnings, Full Moons for culmination and release, and the quarters for action and letting go. The zodiac sign the Moon occupies at each phase adds further flavour to its meaning.

Why does the Moon change shape?

The Moon does not change shape — we simply see different amounts of its sunlit half as it orbits Earth. The shifting angle between the Sun, Earth and Moon is what makes it appear to grow and shrink through the phases.

What is the best Moon phase for manifesting?

The New Moon is traditionally the best phase for manifesting and setting fresh intentions, as it begins a new cycle. You then build through the waxing phases toward the Full Moon, when efforts culminate, and use the waning phases to release whatever blocks your goals.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four Moon phases?

The New Moon (a fresh start), First Quarter (a turning point to act), Full Moon (culmination and release) and Last Quarter (letting go and review). The cycle repeats about every 29.5 days.

What does it mean that a Full Moon is 'in' a sign?

Each phase happens at an exact zodiac degree. A Full Moon in Capricorn, say, carries Capricorn's themes — so the sign tells you the flavour of that lunation.
