Void of Course Moon Calendar

The Moon is void of course from the moment it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. The tradition holds that plans begun in a void Moon "come to nothing", so these are classic windows to rest, review and avoid launching anything new. What is a void of course Moon? →

What the term actually means

The Moon is void of course from the moment it makes its last major aspect in a sign until the moment it enters the next one. Nothing mystical is happening in that window — it is a bookkeeping definition. The Moon has finished relating to the other planets from where it stands, and has not yet arrived anywhere new.

The word major matters. The traditional count is the five Ptolemaic aspects: conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. Sources that also count the minor aspects produce much shorter void periods, which is one reason two calendars can disagree about whether the Moon is void right now.

This page uses the classical definition, with aspects to the seven visible planets. If you compare it against a calendar that includes Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, expect some of the longer voids here to be broken into shorter ones there.

The Moon is void about one seventh of the time

Most pages on this subject describe void periods without ever saying how much of life they cover, which makes them sound rarer than they are. Measuring every void period the engine behind this page computes across ten years, 2020 to 2029, gives the answer: 1,604 periods, averaging 8.0 hours each, covering 14.6 per cent of all elapsed time.

That is roughly one hour in seven, and about 160 separate periods a year — thirteen or fourteen a month, since the Moon changes sign every two and a bit days and each ingress is preceded by a void.

Once you know the figure, the usual advice reads differently. A rule that says never start anything important during a void of course is asking you to give up a seventh of your waking life, distributed unpredictably, and to reschedule around a condition that most people would never notice if nobody told them about it.

Most are short, but some run for two days

The distribution is more interesting than the average. Of those 1,604 periods, 19.6 per cent last under two hours and more than half are under six. The shortest in the decade lasted about eighteen seconds, on 11 June 2023, when the Moon made its final aspect and crossed the sign boundary almost at once.

At the other end, 4.6 per cent run longer than a full day. The longest in the ten-year run began on 8 February 2027 and lasted 46.9 hours — very nearly two days void before the Moon entered Aries.

The long ones happen when the Moon completes its last aspect early in a sign and then travels the remaining degrees without meeting anything. Late-degree aspects to slow outer planets are usually what prevents this, which is exactly why the definition you use changes the answer so much.

What the tradition actually claimed

The classical statement is narrower than the modern one. In horary astrology — the branch that answers a specific question from the chart of the moment it was asked — a void Moon was read as a sign that the matter would not come to pass, and the standard phrasing was that nothing would come of it.

That is a statement about a question, not about your afternoon. It was applied to the chart of a query, where the Moon carries the flow of the matter, and its extension into general life advice happened much later and with far less support.

The traditional literature also lists exceptions, which the modern advice usually drops. A Moon void in Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces was held to do no harm, on the grounds that it is comfortable enough in those signs to manage without help. Whether you accept that or not, it is part of the doctrine being cited.

A reasonable way to use it

Treat it as a description of texture rather than a prohibition. The consistent report from people who track it is that void periods suit continuation better than initiation: finishing, tidying, routine work and rest go fine, while new starts have a tendency to need redoing.

That is a modest enough claim to test on yourself for a couple of months, which is more than can be said for most astrological advice. Note when the void periods fall, note what you began during them, and see whether the pattern holds for you.

What is not reasonable is rearranging a life around it. Fourteen per cent of the clock is too much to surrender to a factor that describes nobody in particular, and a void Moon says nothing about your chart — it is the same void for everyone alive at that moment.

What it does not tell you

It is not personal. Every person on Earth has the same void Moon at the same time, so nothing about it distinguishes your day from anyone else's. Anything specific to you has to come from your own chart being contacted.

It is not a warning about danger. The traditional claim is about outcomes failing to materialise, not about harm, and the stronger versions in circulation are additions rather than sources.

And it is not the only lunar timing factor, or the most useful one. The Moon's sign, its phase and its aspects on the day carry more information about the character of a few hours than whether it happens to be between aspects — and unlike the void, those actually differ from one person's chart to another when you compare them against a birth chart.

Frequently asked

How often is the Moon void of course?

Far more often than most pages imply. Measured across ten years with this site's own ephemeris, there are 1,604 void periods averaging 8.0 hours each, covering 14.6 per cent of all elapsed time — about one hour in seven, and roughly 160 periods a year.

How long does a void of course Moon last?

Usually a few hours, but the range is wide. Nearly a fifth last under two hours and more than half under six; the shortest in a ten-year sample was about eighteen seconds. About one in twenty runs longer than a full day, and the longest measured was 46.9 hours in February 2027.

Should I really avoid starting things during a void Moon?

The traditional claim was narrower than the modern advice. In horary astrology a void Moon meant the matter asked about would come to nothing — a statement about a question, not about your day. Since void periods cover about a seventh of all time and are identical for everyone alive, treating them as a general prohibition means giving up a large part of your life to a factor that says nothing about your chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is a void-of-course Moon?

The Moon is void of course from the moment it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. During that gap it isn't building toward anything new.

What shouldn't I do during a void Moon?

Avoid launching anything you want to last — signing, buying, starting projects or first meetings. Plans begun void of course famously 'come to nothing'. It's ideal for rest, routine and review.

How often does it happen?

Every couple of days — the Moon goes void before each sign change, so there's usually a void period most days, lasting from minutes to over a day.
